Battle of the Books 2015

November means Battle of the Books at Malley Drive Elementary School! This quiz show style competition encourages 4th and 5th grade students to read a variety of books, including award winners, fantasies and historical fiction. Each year the Teacher Librarians, Digital Literacy Co-Teachers and Classroom Teachers involved in Battle of the Books select 10 titles using specific criteria for the upcoming year's competition. Students must read at least 5 of the 10 titles between November and March. After reading each book, students must write 10 questions about the book to be used in practice battles. At the end of Spring Break, students will have practice battles with their teams and online with teams from other schools in the district. Teams will then compete during the 3rd week of April (during school) to determine the Malley Drive Battle of the Books Champions. The champions will then get to compete in the Adams 12 Five Star District Battle of the Books on May 3rd at 5:30 pm at Sky View Elementary School.

This year's titles are:

100 Cupboards by N.D. Wilson

Blood on the River, James Town, 1607 by Elisa Carbone

Bloomability by Sharon Creech

Flora Ulysses: The Illuminated Adventures by Kate DiCamillo

Far North by Will Hobbs

Where the Mountain Meets the Moon by Grace Lin

Jackie and Me by Dan Gutman

The Candy Shop War by Brandon Mull

The Maze of Bones by Rick Riordan

Ms. Weaver and I look forward to some great conversations about these 10 books as students read and learn about the fantastic characters and their stories. If you have any questions about Battle of the Books, please feel free to contact either of us.
