English Language Development
English Language Development (ELD) is an instructional program for students who are not yet proficient in English. Language instruction is based on the Colorado English Language Development (ELD) and/or World-Class Instructional Design and Assessment (WIDA) Standards. It is provided by a highly qualified ELD teacher.
Who is Eligible for ELD?
Students whose first language is not English and who are not yet proficient in English are eligible for ESL. This may include students who were born in the United States where families speak another language at home. English proficiency is based on several measures including standardized test scores for reading and writing, oral assessments (speaking and listening), and student data.
Who Receives ELD Services?
If the Home Language Survey indicates a language influence other than English, the ESL teacher reviews each student's record to determine if further services are needed. Next, the ESL teachers assess the student through a W-APT (WIDA-ACCESS Placement Test) and if the assessment indicates services are needed, the ESL teacher will determine the appropriate placement. After students exit daily ESL instruction, the ESL teacher monitors their progress for the next two years. This is a state requirement.
What language support does an ELD offer?
Students who qualify for ESL services go to ESL class for 45 minutes. Students are pulled in grade level groups. Ms. Fillmore and Ms. Mwamba focus on the areas of literacy (including listening, speaking, reading, and writing) to support language and academic content. ESL teachers and classroom teachers collaborate to establish rigorous language and academic development. The literacy focus includes vocabulary development, reading comprehension strategies, listening comprehension strategies, reading fluency, writing techniques, and various functions and forms of English. Language instruction is provided through meaningful activities that students can enjoy and transfer to life outside of our classrooms!
How To Support The Language Development of our ELD Students
There are several things that parents can do at home that fosters bilingual development. Parents should continue reading books to their students in their primary language as well as using the native language to teach life skills, encourage oral discussions at home to develop oral skills in their native language, and engage students in meaningful conversations. We also have links on our class page for students to practice at home.
All ELD students will be participating in the statewide ACCESS (Assessing Comprehension and Communication in English State to State) testing from January 11, 2016- February 9, 2019, to monitor progress in learning the academic language.
